The Iowa Watercolor Society was organized in Cedar Rapids in 1977 by a small group of devoted watercolorists led by Joe Messner. Exhibitions have been held in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Davenport, Cedar Falls, Ames, Ottumwa, Waterloo, Spencer, and many others.
Originally only transparent watercolor was accepted. In 1987, responding to a broader approach by other regional and nation watercolor organizations, the Iowa Watercolor Society, by member vote, changed the requisites for annual exhibition entries to include all water-based media. Members felt that this change would offer a wider range of opportunities for creative expressiveness beyond transparent watercolor.
